David arbejder i en zoologisk have, og i forsøget på at redde sit arbejde accepterer han en risikabel opgave og skal hente en mystisk pakke i Sydamerika.
Rejsen fører ham om bord på et krydstogtskib med ekskæresten Tess, deres søn Léo og den klodsede kollega Stéphane, som uforvarende slipper en nuttet spirilunge fri. Det sjældne dyr danner hurtigt et venskab med hele familien, og deres tur forvandles til et fuldstændigt kaos.
'Spirillen' er baseret på en populær tegneseriefigur skabt af André Franquin, og det fjollede dyr så første gang dagens lys helt tilbage i 1952.
