Sirens

Headstrong 23 year-old guitarist Lilas Mayassi lives with her single mom and younger brother on the outskirts of Beirut. Having recently graduated from university, by day Lilas teaches music to kids. By night, she’s trying to keep her thrash metal band together. And she’s secretly falling in love with a girl living across the border in Syria. Growing up in the shadow of their parents’ civil war, Lilas and her bandmates, Shery, Maya, Alma and Tatyana (‘the Sirens’) have big dreams but few opportunities. They’re restless to break out and experience life on their own terms, vowing to risk it all to finish their first album and play on an international stage. After being discovered in a major music magazine, the girls get invited to play at Glastonbury, the world’s largest music festival taking place in the UK. But the show doesn't go as well as the Sirens hoped, and Lilas comes home upset that her life didn't change. Lilas starts taking her frustration out on her band, specifically Shery, the enigmatic co-founder and lead guitarist of the band with whom Lilas has a secretive past.As the revolution turns violent, Beirut ignites into flames. The complex relationship between Lilas and Shery begins to fracture and suddenly the band is left without their lead guitarist. Now, with the future of her band, her country and her dreams at stake, Lilas faces a crossroad. She must decide what kind of leader she wants to be, not only for her band, but also as a queer young woman growing up in Lebanon, a region of the Middle East as complex as each of the Sirens themselves.
