Gerda må rejse fra København mod Nordnorge for at redde sin bedste ven Kai, der holdes fanget i Snedronningens ispalads. Undervejs møder hun hjælpsomme dyr og en venlig heks men også farer, der lurer i mørket.
Den danske superstjerne Mads Mikkelsen (’Mufasa' ) lægger stemme til Kais far Severin – en helt ny karakter skabt som en hyldest til H.C. Andersen selv.
