I sci-fi-dramaet 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' vender vi tilbage til Panem i en nervepirrende forhistorie om den unge Haymitch Abernathy, der senere bliver mentor for Katniss og Peeta.
Da den 16-årige Haymitch fra Distrikt 12 bliver udvalgt til det 50. Hunger Games, venter det hidtil mest brutale spil med dobbelt så mange deltagere. Kastet ind i en arena, hvor kun én kan overleve, indgår han en uventet alliance med Maysilee Donner. Men Haymitch har større ambitioner end blot at overleve.
